Shooting a Cape Cod sunset, there was a woman who said that she had been coming there for years. Her family rents a house on the beach for a week. It sounded like heaven to me.
As we were watching the sun falling in the sky, naturally we started talking about photograhing sunsets. She said that her family could not understand why she continued coming to the beach to shoot. She has hundred of sunset photographs, she told me, and had promised them that she would not take more.
It's only been recently that I've made a concerted effort to get out to capture the images. I'm not sure why this is subject matter I never pursued before. I've come to find that I really enjoy it. The rub seems to be that there is a great rush; both in terms of enjoyment and having to move quickly to get the shots. I wonder at times whether I enjoy the sunset as much photographing it as I would just watching.
In the short time I've been doing it I have no problem understanding why the woman at Cape Cod continues returning to the beach. And makes a point of taking her camera.
What's come to be a problem is that I am tiring of the spot I go to take the photographs. There are obstacles in the foreground that I have to shoot around, but that hasn't been too much of an issue. What has come to be frustrating is wanting to "use" the foreground in the photographs and having nothing to use for that purpose other than some trees. I'd love to find a spot to shoot over water.
I'm going to explore other places for my sunset safaris.
The results of a recent "siting"...

Who cares why someone does something that makes them ahppy.
I love this gallery!
Beautiful. Though I wonder why the woman you speak of would feel pressured to stop taking sunset photographs. I hope she never stops.
I have hundreds of sunset photos and will contiue until I die.
Your shots here are gorgeous and the sky looks dramatic with the clouds like that.
I'm visiting via the photography carnival.
These sunsets are amazing. I've never been able to successfully capture a sunset so it looks like these, even if the sunset itself did.
As usual your sunset photos are gorgeous! I too have started taking pictures of the skies (with trees in the foreground) and have posted a few on my personal blog Notes!!
This time I am here via the GONZO Photography blog!!!

These would be great illustrations for someone's book--or a book cover. Aaaah yes, they're just amazing.
Amazing photos!
Great photos Kilroy. They turned out really well. I got a new digital camera for Christmas but it will take me a while before I'm able to shoot anything as good as this. I'm visiting you via the photography carnival.
The two first photographs define such vivid hues, as the sun sets. Even as the clouds sweep the entire sky the colours from the sun seem to give the air a sort of warmth for one last time.
The third one looks like a pastel- I like how the colours of the sky seem to be smeared together.
Nice work.
