The committee selects two for the ballot, it's up to us to convince them to make L.C. Greenwood one of those two selections when they announce their 2012 nominees in August of this year. "I have an idea...."

Ah, yes, when TheSpecialOne says "I have an idea..." I never know what will follow, only that it will be something which piques my interest.

It was, in fact, one of these conversations which led to us spending both Christmas and New Year in Sicily last year. She had, unbeknownst to me, located members of my extended family who remained in Italy when others came to America in the early 1920s.

If you've read this blog for any period of time you may know that I don't normally buy Christmas gifts. In fact, I don't buy gifts any time they're "expected" because I give, generously, as and when I choose.

We won't be traveling far during the Chrishanukwanztivus season this year, not even to La Alegría, my plantation in Costa Rica, but there is one thing we have planned, to visit Al's daughter's family, including my new Goddaughter, in White Sands, New Mexico. I couldn't think of a better reason to break with tradition and indulge in the holiday shopping bonanza.

I've been working on the long-delayed final installment of the Last Road Trip, which I last looked at when we were in Sicily, before setting it aside, and haven't felt much holiday spirit. TheSpecialOne suggested that instead of simply forgetting about decorating at Black Squirrel Run that I might consider simply doing the mantle.

It was a good compromise, I thought, and felt her idea of doing it in fuchsia and silver would Work, so here you have it.

There have been few moments in my life which were more twisted, more perplexing than when I heard my buddy Al's wife say, "Where should we spread the ashes?" Life made more sense when I was eating mescaline than at that moment.

The thing I am thankful for, looking back, is that I was stone-cold sober when I had to wrap my head around that one.

Al, you see, was one of my best friends, who days before had put a .357 in his mouth. I had expected to see him, we were planning a road trip, to points unknown, but I hadn't expected any of This. I didn't know, nor did his wife, that his cancer had returned and the prognosis was not good.

What followed was The Last Road Trip. The Master Baiter and I hit the road to find the Right place to spread Al's ashes. It took us 39 days to travel through 10 states before we found It, Al's final resting place. It was at Wind River Canyon, Wyoming that we spread Al's ashes.

One thing I've known for a long time is that I'll be cremated when my time comes. I'd never given a thought, though, to what would happen afterward. That is to say, what will happen with my ashes.

I met with my attorney after returning from The Last Road Trip in order to make modifications to my will. One of the things I made a point of doing was to arrange an admittedly extravagant party for the family and close friends I leave behind. The subject of my ashes came up Momentarily, only to be passed over to be dealt with another time.

I've spent a fair amount of time over the past year-and-a-half wresting with the question of what will happen with my ashes. Earlier this morning I made a final decision.

Neptune Memorial Reef will be my final resting place. Neptune Memorial Reef is a man-made reef off the coast of Miami, 3.25 miles east of Key Biscayne, built in the image of The Lost City of Atlantis.

I've never had any interest in collecting friends on Facebook, followers on Twitter or mutual subscribers (a phrase introduced to replace the term friend) on StumbleUpon. That doesn't mesh with my philosophy of valuing relationships.

I'm also not one of those people who uses StumbleUpon as nothing more than a tool to drive traffic to my website. I enjoy the social aspect of StumbleUpon and it's not unusual for me to send a note through share as a way of connecting with a friend, not simply to share content which might be stumbled.

Some people, though, only send shares to ask for stumbles. You send them a note, as a friend, and they ignore it, only to send another share asking for a stumble.

It was interesting to me when a mutual subscriber, whom I would not refer to as an acquaintance, let alone a friend, one that always ignores friendly notes and only asks for stumbles, responded to a note I sent saying the site they were sharing, over and over, has a bad reputation on Web Of Trust, a great add-on for Firefox.

Yes, eLearners.com has a Poor Reputation on Web Of Trust. If it were one of the "most popular sites on the internet" would that be a guarantee it's operation is squeaky clean? Not necessarily. If it generates over $1 million or $1 billion per week is that a reason to trust the site? No.

I don't trade stumbles, I don't stumble everything that comes across my stumble button and I don't expect anyone to stumble everything I send them. There are "friends" or mutual subscribers who aren't worth having, people who only want to use you to promote their content are at the top of that list in my book.

I've never been one to "collect friends" either in life or what has become an extension of our lives, social media. I'm also not one of those people who describes social media as "a numbers game" and I hate that viewpoint.

There's one thing all bloggers and authors who write for paid content websites share, we want to have our content read. Or viewed in the case of photographers and artists who utilize sites tailored to present their work.

If you're a blogger and/or contribute to paid content websites you're more likely than not to use social media to put what you're producing in front of people and try to expand your audience using sites like Twitter and Facebook.

I'm as enthusiastic a person as you'll meet when it comes to helping my friends get their content out. The friends I'm happiest to help, unquestionably, are the people who are equally as enthusiastic about doing what they can to support my effort.

In the same vein, if you have a friends who publishes whatever and you'd like me to help them I'll be happy to. What's important to me is to see that you'll be happy to help my friends just as I help yours.

A popular social media site for bloggers and paid content website authors is StumbleUpon.

I suspect there are people who sign on with SU to recapture the joy they experienced when the internet was new to them and they surfed simply to see what they might find. If it weren't for bloggers, though, when you look at it realistically, there wouldn't be any social media site as successful as it is today. More than anything people are on StumbleUpon because they have content they want people to see.

You have to do more than stumble your own content, of course, because there are vigilantes on StumbleUpon who think it's their job to identify people who do not adhere to the "Terms of Service" and work to have them banned from the site. You can't "trade" stumbles with your friends either, for the same reason.

One of the things that makes StumbleUpon popular, though, is providing means to share your content with friends, although that's a term SU no longer uses, and you can BUY stumbles by paying the site to make your content available {sic}.

There have been times I've been very active on StumbleUpon, logging in a time or two a day, and other times I haven't been active. Recently, though, I went through a period when I wasn't blogging and the only social media I was doing was Facebook.

When I returned to StumbleUpon I had 500 shares waiting for me, which is as many as you can get. No matter how much I stumbled I couldn't get 99 shares off my stumble button. That, I can tell you, is no fun at all...especially when you have a few friends who don't hesitate for a moment to send you one share after another.

Today I made a decision I've been avoiding for the longest time, to blow through the shares, without looking at any of them, simply hitting the stumble button over and over and over and over to get rid of them. That's the only thing thing I could do to put myself in a position again to help my friends by supporting their content which appeals to me.

In addition to StumbleUpon I'm active on Facebook, Twitter and ShoutWire. I don't dig Digg because they're too much ass kissing required to gain traction and I'm not willing to do it at all.

I set up an email - kilroy.gonzo@gmail.com - and would be happy to look at any content you have online which you'd like to see thumbed, tweeted, posted on Facebook and/or shouted. I plan at this point to stumble with greater regularity, but simply can't promise that I'll log in on a daily basis. I'd much rather be able to stumble and see what comes up vs. having to wade through share after share after share after share, especially one after another from a few people.

Green Acres Is The Place To Be

Returning to blogging isn't something which has come easily.

I won't get into all the things I've been dealing with over the past eight months. But, don't be surprised when you begin seeing me show up more often, because there's a lot going on in my little world and I have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Today I'm posting because I thought you might enjoy seeing some pictures of my garden.

I've been an accomplished indoor gardener for several years, but there are no cameras allowed...because that's what we refer to in the business as evidence. Ho Ho.

This year, for the first time, we set aside some space in The Writer's Refuge for vegetables and herbs.

Actually the only vegetables we put in are tomatoes and lettuce. Along with that, we have a thriving crop of basil and cilantro. Check it out....

If you're not one of the 2,700+ friends I have on Facebook {yes, that's me, Michael Anthony} I suspect you might think I was in jail, deathly ill or had cashed in my chips. In fact, an old friend on StumbleUpon said that a mutual friend told her I had some sort of lung disease.

It's been just about a year since my buddy Al blew his brains out and I set off on The Last Road Trip {with The Master Baiter} to find the Right place to spread his ashes. More than once as the year's gone on, including the 2 1/2 weeks TheSpecialOne and I spent in Italy over Christmas and New Year, I've questioned whether I wanted to continue on with The Gonzo Papers.

Ultimately, after much consideration, I've decided that this small thread of the World Wide Web provides me with a forum unlike any other, one to which I've devoted a great deal of time and effort, and when all is said and done, more than anything, I have a lot of fun with it.

Yes, you'll be seeing the irregularly regular updates you were once accustomed to and will find me actively engaged on Twitter and StumbleUpon in addition to Facebook. It's good to be back and I'll see you around the bend, eh.

You could classify beautiful women as an industry and there's no shortage either of distributors nor consumers.

Beauty is, to be sure, a subjective matter and it's a completely different conversation than talking about what makes a woman attractive. It's necessary to consider factors such as intelligence, personality, attitude and style to determine whether or not a woman is attractive.

Compiling a list of the World's Most Beautiful Women isn't something I found very interesting, they're a dime a dozen.

I Stumbled Upon 500 Shares

Apparently that's the limit on the number of shares you can receive before your stumble button needs to be cleared.

I say that because, after a six-week break from stumbling, 500 was the number of shares I had waiting for me when I logged in this morning.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that I had received 500 shares by the time the first week went by. Typically I would find a hundred, stumble through them, thumb what I feel to be appropriate and write a lot of notes.

Anyone whose active on StumbleUpon and has known me for any period of time is aware that I'm not one of those people who collects mutual subscribers {sic} in order to bump up my number, nor is my focus pushing traffic to my blog.

Quite the opposite, in fact. I value my social media friends, whether it's here, on Twitter or on Facebook, enjoy engaging with them and am quite happy to give a hand, however that may be.

I use the Share feature on StumbleUpon more as a way to connect with friends than I do to request support for my content.

To be sure, I appreciate my friends supporting my effort as much as I am happy to support theirs. And I do ask for stumbles, on occasion, but that's rare in comparison to the number of notes I send simply to foster a Human Connection.

Since first signing on {17 December, 2007} this was the longest break I've taken from stumbling. I didn't see any way I could devote the time and attention I normally would, not if I wanted to start stumbling again and engage with my friends.

Sorry to say, what I saw to be my only reasonable option was to click through the shares as quickly as possible, not even giving the pages enough time to load, in order to get back to zero so I can return to a normal stumbling routine.

It will be good to get back to stumbling, with at least some semblance of regularity as I have in the past, and re-connect with my friends on StumbleUpon.

I'd like to become further engaged with my stumbling friends both on Twitter and Facebook {yes, that's me}. If you have content you wish to get around let me know, through those channels, and I'll do what I can. Needless to say, I appreciate the same consideration.

Installment 1

A woman sits alone in a classy, but edgy bar. All eyes have been on her since she arrived an hour before. She is statuesque; a mane of red curls flow over her shoulders. She is dressed to kill in a silk blouse accented by pearls, a short skirt, nylons and black FUCK ME heels.

One man after another has sent her drinks, but she has turned each and every one away. Sitting, drinking cranberry juice, she taps her freshly manicured nails on the bar. Waiting.

There will be a man arriving. She knows this is where he comes once he finishes working on Friday nights. Her friend has dated him before, but things did not work out for them. Her friend claimed that he was overly dominant, controlling. She feels her friend is weak. It is a man with a strong spirit that she wants; it is what she needs. She is frequently approached, but men are intimidated be her. If they are able to capture attention at all, they have no ability to maintain her interest.

As she sees him enter, the woman sits without moving. He walks confidently, self assured, wearing a blue oxford shirt and black khakis. Hoping to catch his eye, she slides off the stool…and glides toward him. Suzanne then looked away. She sat for a few minutes studying the other people sitting around the bar. While she purposefully did not look at Greg she knew every move he made. Suzanne knew he was looking at her; she felt his eyes on the nape of her neck.

When the barstool scraped across the floor she had no doubt in her mind that it was him. She heard him ask, speaking barely above a whisper, where he would find the payphone. The bartender directed him to the back of the bar. As Greg made his way to the telephone he was in full view.

Suzanne watched as Greg made the call. She could read his lips slightly; he was saying that he had a change in plans. He would not be available tonight. As he hung up the phone, Greg turned and looked into Suzann's eyes. She watched as he returned to his seat at the bar.

I've fallen behind quite a bit on posting.

In addition to the time we've spent in Sicily we visited Rome, twice, Naples and Florence. The weather has been beautiful, it's been warm even when it was rainy, except when we were in Florence where the temperatures were in the 40s at best.

We're going north once more, to visit Milan, before returning to the States.

I received an email this morning, from my housekeeper, which included a photograph taken out the window yesterday at Black Squirrel Run. It's quite a contrast compared with the view we have in the house where we're staying here in Militello Rosmarino.

Hunter S. Thompson, Richard Bernstein wrote in the New York Times in 1997, "has always burned to carve his initials onto the collective awareness. What other kind of person would, beginning in his teen years, make carbon copies of every letter he wrote -- to his mother, his Army friends and commanding officers, his girlfriends, his various agents and editors -- specifically in the hope that they would be published?"

Bernstein was reviewing The Good Doctor's book, The Proud Highway.

Hunter S. Thompson was a prolific letter writer; it's been estimated that his archive included in excess of 20,000 letters he wrote in his lifetime. The Proud Highway is comprised of letters he wrote between 1955 and 1967.

As a matter-of-course, I always pack a book or three when I'm going to be traveling for any period of time. The one book I brought to Italy is The Proud Highway.

I've been reading letters AIRMAN Hunter S. Thompson wrote while serving in the United States Air Force from from 1956 to 1957.

Having completed this section, I'm setting the book aside and turning my attention to work on the final installment of the Last Road Trip series. Of course, that's a topic that's better to address another time.

While AIRMAN Thompson wrote these letters a decade before Hell's Angels was published, the first signs of The Good Doctor were already appearing, to wit...

October 25, 1956

"Of course I'll have to apologize to all the people who were struck by the stray shrapnel, but not to the sports section. A Tour Of Sicily... And The Pleasures Of The Flesh

It's rare that TheSpecialOne and I do touristy things when we travel. It's the first time either of us have been to Italy, though, and we've enjoyed the opportunity to explore Sicily.

That's not to say we've denied ourselves the time, or that we've failed to create opportunities, to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh. To be sure, we've made of point of basking in wave after wave of orgasmic joy.

There's no shortage of beautiful landscapes in Sicily. It says something, I suppose, about how much TheSpecialOne and I are enjoying ourselves, in that these are the only two photographs I shot along the way.

There's no shortages of things to see in Siracusa. The one I wanted to share with you is the Roman Aphitheatre...

Rausa is an interesting city; for the geography alone, if nothing else. It was built on a wide limestone hill between two deep valleys, Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica.

Our last stop was Girgenti, where we toured the Valley of the Temples....

That's going to have to be all for now. It's just past midnight and TheSpecialOne and I are going out to enjoy Catania once more before leaving for Rome tomorrow.

Salutamu , friends, from Catania, Sicily...

It's our third day in Italy; this is the view we have from the apartment where we're staying. Needless to say, I couldn't ask for a much better view of Mt. Etna....

It's been about 2 1/2 years since my buddy Salvatore visited Black Squirrel Run.

While it took longer than I would have preferred, I'm happy to have finally made it to visit Sal, here in Catania, as well as my extended family, in Militello Rosmarino.

The weather's been a mixed bag since we arrived and it was less than optimum the day we went to Militello Rosmarino....

My family immigrated to America from Militello Rosmarino, Sicily in the early 1920s; this is the first time I've had an opportunity to meet members of my family who remained in Italy.

We'll definitely be returning to visit with them again before returning to the United States and I'm hoping the weather will be better.

In addition to Militello Rosmarino, in the Province of Messina, we also visited Cifalù, in the Province of Palermo....

An interesting, and unexpected, aspect of this trip, given my fondness for the movie Patton, has been visiting locations where the United States triumphed in World War II battles.

Another notable thing, at least to me, is that I'm making real progress on a post which will finally wrap up the Final Road Trip series; just short of five months, at this point, since returning from the trip. For the first time, I truly believe I'll be able to complete it.

We're planning to be in Italy for a week-and-a-half; our itinerary, at least as close as we come to having one, includes visiting Rome, Naples and Florence.

TheSpecialOne would like to visit Milan, given it's status as a fashion capital, but neither of us wants to deal with winter weather when we have the opportunity to enjoy what would pass for a comfortable summer day...in December.

The Wild Trees by Richard Preston.

It typically doesn't take me two months to read a book, certainly not one of about 300 pages.

As it is I've been reading The Wild Trees for about seven weeks, as this is a book to be savored, and I have another 40 pages to go.

The Master Baiter showed great kindness in surprising me with this gift, I'm very appreciative.

More than anything it's a great way to remember our time in the Cathedral of the Redwoods.

I've never run three sets of excerpts from a book before. If you haven't seen the previous installments I'd advise you to check out...

A Thanksgiving Surprise

TheSpecialOne and I spent last Christmas at La Alegría. It came as a surprise to her family, needless to say, since we left Christmas eve morning without telling anyone in advance.

As it turns out, they haven't forgotten about us not sharing Christmas with them.

When I arrived at her house Thanksgiving morning, around 2:30, TheSpecialOne's family had a surprise for me.

I knew her sisters were staying overnight to help with the cooking, which is unusual, but I didn't question as to why.

I quickly became very clear....

Yes, Thanksgiving at TheSpecialOne's house this year was a combination of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of course, it could have simply been Christmas.

I learned later that it came as a surprise to TheSpecialOne as well. One of her sisters has a key and while she was in Chicago for two days they decorated the house.

I was rather impressed by the whole thing, I must say. It's not often that someone pulls off something of this magnitude on me.

As much as anything I was amazed at just how much work they did in only two days.

I learned, from one of the brother-in-laws that it was her oldest sister who initiated the surprise. The planning began while I was on The Last Road Trip; they thought, after that experience, if there was ever a year to be thankful this is it.

Interesting that TheSpecialOne was able to keep the secret once she returned from Chicago. I may have to spank for her that.

Naturally, they didn't limit the holiday surprise to simply decorating the house, and bringing a few gifts for us. Oh, no, it carried over to the menu as well.

One of TheSpecialOne's sisters is a chef; she made sausage stuffed turducken. We also had roast goose and a ham.

You couldn't call it a Thanksgiving dinner and do it justice. It would best be described, I'd say, as a holiday feast.

It's been many years since I stopped giving gifts on occasions when they're "expected" because, to me, expectation diminishes gift giving.

That may seem contrary to the fact that I'm a fan of holidays. That's because holidays provide an opportunity to come together with those for whom I have feelings, not a reason to give gifts.

I've begun to think, though, that this year I may have to make an exception, at least when it comes to TheSpecialOne and her family. I'll have to ponder that one a bit.

Instead of buying gifts I may invite TheSpecialOne's family to spend Christmas at La Alegría.

I've never had them all there at one time before. Of course, to truly bring her entire family to Costa Rica I would probably have to charter a jet and I'm not sure that's something I want to do.

Fortunately these are decisions I don't have to make at the moment. All I know, with certainty, is this will not be a normal holiday season.

Autumn At Black Squirrel Run

I've gone out a number of times over the years to photograph autumn trees.

This year, though, I gained inspiration from a friend whose born in "a purple month" and photographed the hydrangea bushes in The Writer's Refuge, in all their autumn splendor.

Thanksgiving comes up this week, and among the things I have to be thankful for are friends who make blogging Fun. That becomes more and more important, when you're into your fifth year, because being a blogger Can be work.

Making A Human Connection In Social Media

Does that avatar look familiar?

Yes, that's right, it's my new Facebook page.

I consult with clients on social media issues as a matter of course. Our work ranges from developing and implementing a comprehensive social media strategy to putting pages online and extends to ghost posting of tweets and updates.

What I haven't done is put a personal page on either Facebook or Twitter. Given that, I couldn't create a fan page for The Gonzo Papers.

Instead I created a page as a blogger. Of course, Facebook wouldn't accept any derivation of Kilroy_60. No, you'll find me on Facebook as, Kil Roy. Ho Ho.

These are my first 123 Facebook friends...

It won't come as news, nor as a surprise, to anyone I've known as a blogger over the past four years that I set up this page on Facebook {as well as a Twitter page} to extend the reach of The Gonzo Papers.

Meeting new people through social media is fun, I'll grant you, but there's no good reason to devote time to it lacking a Human Connection.

If we are friends on Facebook and/or mutual followers on Twitter let's make a point of connecting. I'm as happy to give bloggers a boost who have content they want to get out as I am to get a bump.

Joanna Krupa Falls Short of Dancing With The Stars Final

It's season 9 of Dancing With The Stars and, for the first time, I picked a winner as they came out of the gate in Week 1... Joanna Krupa.

It's not been usual to see Joanna at or near the top of the leader board, week in and week out, over the past two months.

It didn't come as any surprise that Joanna received high scores from the judges this week, as she is able to convey the feeling of raw sex on the dance floor.

Ah, yes, Joanna Krupa is...scorching hot.

As it turned out, though, the vote of the fans knocked Joanna out of the finals.

Rather unfortunate, I'd say, but it doesn't detract from her status as one of the sexiest women to appear in nine seasons of Dancing with The Stars.

I'll be sure to run another post, featuring some of my favorite dances Joanna Krupa performed this season. Needless to say, watching the videos, to select which performances to include isn't difficult work. Ho Ho

The Wild Trees by Richard Preston

I have this Ansel Adams print hanging in The Writer's Nook: Redwoods, Bull Creek Flat.

When The Master Baiter and I went to California back in June, and considered spreading my buddy Al's ashes in the Cathedral of the Redwoods, one of the reasons was that it was Al who gave me the Redwoods print as a birthday gift.

It touched me deeply when The Master Baiter presented me with a copy of the book The Wild Trees by Richard Preston, about four months after we were in Humboldt County walking among the most magnificent trees on Earth.

I've been savoring The Wild Trees over the past few weeks. You can tell by the fact that I've only read about 1/3 of the book thus far.

You don't have to be a fan of trees, in general, nor redwoods specifically, to enjoy The Wild Trees. Richard Preston is an exceptional story teller and he did a wonderful job with this book.

These are some of my favorite excerpts...

"By the measure of overall size---the volume of wood--- the largest species of living tree on earth is not the coast redwood but the giant sequoia, a type of cypress that is closely related to the coast redwood. The giant sequoia occurs in sixty-seven small spots on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. (The species name of the tree is Sequoiadendron giganteum.) The giant sequoia thrives in sunshine, and it gets moisture from melting snows. Giant sequoias (mountain trees) and coast redwoods (coastal fog-belt trees) are never found in the same forest."

"Bill Denison, who had been the first explorer of the Pacific Northwest canopy, came to the wedding. By then, he had retired and was getting on in years. John Travolta is famous, or infamous depending upon your point of view, for living in a home (Jumbolair at Greystone Airport in Ocala, Florida show above) where he parks the airplanes he owns on site.

My buddy Tony, who publishes The Lives an Times..., pointed out that it's not just celebrities who are able to pull an airplane up to the door of their home.

In Wadsworth, Ohio, in fact, people live in a housing development called Skypark where they do just that...

While Skypark is likely to be one of the most unique airports you'll run across it's not a great airport.

Here is a United States soldier in Iraq , stationed in a big sand box.

It's Warrant Officer Brook Turner; he's stationed at Camp Cooke north of Baghdad.

Warrant Officer Turner asked his wife to send him dirt ( U.S. soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet. If you notice, he is even cutting the grass with a pair of a scissors!

When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass and the American soil -- to bring them good luck.

Sometimes we are in such a hurry that we don't stop and think about the little things that we take for granted. Upon receiving this, say a little prayer for our soldiers that give and give (and give up) so unselfishly for us.

Tyra Banks, Her Supermodel Body Is Back

An unflattering photograph of Tyra Banks in a swimsuit was circulated by the media two years ago. The shot received heavy exposure on the Web. Her response was to tell the world to kiss her fat ass.

The supermodel turned actress turned TV host is famous for championing "real beauty." On the season premier of her talk show she revealed her real hair and is, reportedly, no longer wearing wigs.

Tyra wore a size 14-16, according to media accounts, for two years. Then, last month, she appeared in a new photo shoot showing off her slimmed down size 8 body.

I'd say Tyra Banks' "new body" looks like the supermodel body that made her famous...

Cue the music... It's time for Hors d'oeuvres and Drinks!

There are plenty of delicious dishes to be sampled, throughout this dinner party, so I hope you're hungry.

Never under estimate the value of a moment, my friends, and when any blog is still rolling after four years it's perfect time to celebrate.

No blog carnival is a historic event, of course, but it's a great way to meet other bloggers and forge new relationships.

It takes some people a great deal of time to find their way in the blogosphere and to forge relationships, this is a great starting off point for anyone who is new and a way to gain even better footing for established bloggers.

The point of setting up the carnival as a dinner, of course, is making it enjoyable to move from one portion to another, because it's the journey that matters.

It's no mystery, after all, the reason I devote time to putting these carnivals together is to provide a way to support my blogger friends.

Let's enjoy the Appetizers course because it's no hoax to say there's plenty of great content to check out.... Of course, I don't want to say too much.

You don't want to exit too soon, because there's one more portion you don't want to miss. I trust anyone with good intuition already knew that.

Anyone who puts together a list of Dos and Don'ts on hosting or attending a dinner party will tell you... Dessert must be memorable.

Some people consider it strange to craft a carnival in this manner, not clearly identifying each entry, but to me it makes the experience more fun and that's what a good dessert course must be.

I'd venture a guess that tens of thousands of blogs have come and gone since I launched The Gonzo Papers on 29 October, 2005.
Consistency has never been a hallmark of The Gonzo Papers, I'll grant you, neither in terms of posting frequency or content quality.

No, this is not a venture in which I invest what is required to achieve excellence, I'll leave that to professional bloggers like Chris Brogan, but it is a thread of the World Wide Web where you'll find passion, an unapologetic point of view, a sense of whimsy and, on a good day, a bit of humor.

I have no expectation anyone will connect with, appreciate and/or support everything that appears here. Frankly, if there is I'd feel I'm failing and, frankly, be concerned about their well being. Ho Ho.

I've never been flippant about my readership, to be sure, whether a visitor has stumbled upon The Gonzo Papers through one social media site or another, they landed here by following a link, with no good idea what they were in for, or they fell down the rabbit hole... I appreciate every visitor.

Those who make their way to The Gonzo Papers as a matter of course, the ones who return with some level of consistency, naturally, are the readers I appreciate most and value above all others.

To you, I offer a heartfelt thank you.

All my social media activity flows from The Gonzo Papers. I owe a debt of gratitude, of course, to anyone and everyone who chooses to partake of my day-to-day ebb and flow by subscribing, following, friending and whatever other terms are applied by various sites.

Considering what The Gonzo Papers would be like four years in the future, or whether it would even exist, isn't something that entered by mind when I published my first post on 29 October, 2005.

Four years later I rarely look beyond the next post when I consider the future of my blog. More often than not I tend to think that's the best way to approach publishing The Gonzo Papers because it's what Works for me and that trumps all other considerations.

The Cathedral Of The Redwoods

If walking among the redwoods was all I needed before punching my ticket I could go today without objection. I've lived a charmed life and spending time in the cathedral of the redwoods was extraordinary.

It was four months ago that I made that assertion. I was in Humboldt County, California on The Last Road Trip with The Master Baiter, looking for an appropriate place to spread the ashes of a friend who'd committed suicide a few weeks earlier.

There have been periods in my life when I've been actively engaged as a photographer and other times when I could take it or leave it.

When I left Black Squirrel Run to go to Al's memorial service taking a camera didn't enter my mind. I never considered shooting photographs to be a burden until The Last Road Trip. Some days I shot more, some days I shot less and some days it wasn't something I'd ever consider.

Typically, on anything that qualifies as a normal day in my life, I could have easily spent hours shooting photographs in the Cathedral of the Redwoods. That day in June I shot a total of five, one when we put the camera on a tripod and set a timer, enabling me to have a photograph taken with The Master Baiter among the redwoods.

Last week The Master Baiter surprised me with a book, The Wild Trees {A Story of Passion and Daring} by Richard Preston.

Richard Preston is a gifted story teller and The Wild Trees is a masterpiece.

While I'm enjoying the book, it's also reawakened feelings I experienced during The Last Road Trip which are anything but comfortable. It's been a good reminder why I've had such a difficult time writing what will serve as a conclusion to the Last Road Trip series.

Great Bridges Of The World On Google Earth

No trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is complete without taking a drive that brings you into town over the Fort Pitt Bridge.

The view of downtown that you see upon exiting the tunnel, with Heinz Field and PNC Park off to the left, makes it, for me, one of the world's great bridges.

I couldn't think of a better subject to explore on Google Earth than the great bridges of the world. For my money that list would have to include...

Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio, aka Old Bridge, is a Medieval bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common.

Millau Viaduct

The Millau Viaduct is an enormous cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in southern France.

It is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world, with one mast's summit at 343 metres (1,125 ft) — slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and only 38 m (125 ft) shorter than the Empire State Building. The viaduct is part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Montpellier.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean.

As part of both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County.

Erasmus Bridge

The Erasmusbrug, aka Erasmus Bridge, is a cable stayed bridge across the New Meuse river, linking the northern and southern halves of the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The Erasmusbrug was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The 808 meter long bridge has a 139 meter-high asymmetrical pylon, earning the bridge its nickname of "The Swan".

The southern span of the bridge has a 89 meter long bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in West Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.

San Diego-Coronado Bridge

The San Diego-Coronado Bridge is a "prestressed concrete/steel" girder bridge, crossing over San Diego Bay in the United States, linking San Diego, California with Coronado, California.

The 11,179-foot-long (3,407 m or 2.1 mi) bridge ascends from Coronado at a 4.67 percent grade before curving 80 degrees toward San Diego. The span reaches a maximum height of 200 feet (61m), allowing the U.S. Navy ships which operate out of the nearby Naval Station San Diego to pass underneath it.

Tsing Ma Bridge, Hong Kong

The Tsing Ma Bridge is a bridge in Hong Kong. It is the world's seventh-longest span suspension bridge. The bridge was named after two of the islands at its ends, namely Tsing Yi and Ma Wan . It has two decks and carries both road and rail traffic, which also makes it the largest suspension bridge of this type.

Tacoma Narrows Bridge

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of mile-long suspension bridges in the U.S. state of Washington, which carry State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district and the North Shore.

The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia. The bridge is locally nicknamed "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design.

According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's widest long-span bridge and it is tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres (429.6 ft) from top to water level.

Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge

The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts.

The bridge and connecting tunnel were built as part of the Big Dig, the largest highway construction project in the United States. Finished in 2003, the bridge's unique styling quickly became an icon for Boston.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name.

The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers.

Fort Pitt Bridge

The Fort Pitt Bridge is a steel, double decker bowstring arch bridge that spans the Monongahela River near its confluence with the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It is famous for being the "best way to enter an American city." Motorists traveling from the West on I-279 are given no visual cues regarding their nearness to downtown Pittsburgh as they enter the Fort Pitt Tunnels. Gateshead Millennium Bridge

In 2006, according to freshcut.com, 335 million people visited more than 600 amusement parks in the United States. That, the site says, amounts to estimated revenues of $11.5 billion, a $4 billion increase over 1996.

Amusement Today magazine reported that there was an overall increase in amusement park attendance during the summer of 2008.

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida, shown at the top of this post, ranked #1 in attendance with 17,063 visitors. Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, was second with attendance of 14,721,000.

Celebrity Homes On Google Earth

Search the web for home addresses of celebrities and the results range from aggravating dead ends to amazing finds.

If you want to plug in a name, ask for a home address and expect to get exactly what you're looking for I can tell you that's not going to happen in most cases.

Typically you have to do a bit of detective work, picking up a bits of information from different websites. Sometimes you'll find a picture of the property you're looking for, but, of course, what you see in the picture isn't likely to be what you see in Google Earth.

One interesting thing is that when you find the street address for some celebrity homes they aren't much to look at on Google Earth. Then there are cases where a number of celebrities live fairly close to each other and it's difficult to pick out one from another.
