Return Humanity To Darfur

I appeal to netizens around the globe to take action in support of returning humanity to Darfur.

Make today the day that you stand in support of stopping the genocide in Darfur. Make your voice heard, enlist those in your social network to help and ask them to do the same.

Begin by signing this petition. {Check out the petition sponsor}

The genocide occurring in the Darfur region of western Sudan began in 2004. Government troops and militia groups known as janjaweed sought to crush rebels who complained that the black residents of the region had been neglected by the Muslim central government.

The janjaweed is responsible for widespread killing of civilians; that with the support of the central government.

{Life is Darfur is no game. Could you survive?}

A May, 2007 New York Times article estimated that 200,000 had died and more than 2.5 million more were believed to have fled their homes in the face of atrocities and the destruction of villages.

Every day we allow this to continue, each and every one of us becomes less human.

Interventions intended to stop the genocide in Sudan have been weak and ineffective with little or no follow-through. It is up to us to demand that our individual governments act and that we push the United Nations to take action.

No governmental body in the world has shown it will do what is necessary to stop the genocide. If pressure is not applied, if it is not made clear to government officials that we are unwilling to accept their inaction nothing is going to change.

Regardless of whether you have expressed support for this cause in the past or not, let us stand together beginning today to become a force that governments can not ignore.

If you are signing on to support this cause feel free to write a comment on this post and include the URL where people can most easily connect with you.

Cult Of Personality Surrounding Palin Is Seen By Campaign Officials As A Blessing, Her Record Is A Problem To Be Managed

`Campaign insiders say that John McCain is counting on the cult of personality surrounding Sarah Palin to lift him over Barack Obama in November.

Both McCain and campaign officials recognize that Palin's record, as Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska and as Governor, is a problem to be managed. That, campaign insiders say, is why Palin is being shielded from solo media interviews.

Palin gets high marks for her ability to stay on message and deliver the talking points provided by the campaign.

Inquiries regarding access to Palin, including those directed to the governor's office, are being handled by campaign officials.

Insiders say that every appearance by Palin will be micromanaged by the campaign to ensure she will not appear in a setting where an examination of her record will expose flaws.

It's difficult to ascertain where Palin stands on the issues; even with exhaustive research. That, according to insiders, has allowed the campaign to easily manipulate her stance to fit with the positions of Senator McCain.

What's troubling for the campaign are numerous reports, from those who worked closely with her in Alaska, that Palin is manipulative and vindictive.

Gaining the support of Conservatives was a top priority for McCain and played a pivotal role in adding Palin to the ticket.

It hasn't been difficult for Conservatives to see that the Governor of Alaska is a good fit for them.

Palin said, “I am pro-life and I believe that marriage should only be between and man and a woman.”

The Obama campaign has refused to make an issue of the pregnancy of Palin's daughter. To some it reflects a failure of her public policies.

Palin backed abstinence-only education during her 2006 gubernatorial race.

She responded to a question regarding support of funding for abstinence-until-marriage education, instead of for, "explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools" writing, "Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support."

Palin supports the reversal of Roe v. Wade and has said, "I think it should (be reversed) and I think states should be able to decide that issue."

Palin has stated that she opposes abortion. Her opposition extends to cases of rape or incest, including those that involve children.

While Palin served as mayor of Wasilla the police chief, whom she appointed, cut his departmental budget by instituting a policy where rape victims were required to pay $500 to $1200 for the rape kits used to examine them and gather evidence in cases of sexual assault.

Palin reviewed and signed off on this.

The religious right has firmly embraced Palin; partly because of the characterization of her as a faith-based mayor.

She has embraced the endorsement of religious leaders. "Faith is very important to so many of us here in America," said Palin. "I would never support any government effort to stifle our freedom of religion or freedom of expression or freedom of speech."

The teaching of creationism in public schools is an issue Palin has supported.

Palin has personal connections to the International Association of Character Cities; an organization that purports to be secular but is modeled on the evangelical teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles.

As Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin directed the Wasilla City Council to pass a resolution declaring itself a "City of Character."

The resolution, which was adopted unanimously, pledged that Wasilla would "do all in its power" to promote "positive and constructive character qualities which distinguish between right and wrong."

Wasilla is one of about 200 cities nationwide that have committed themselves, in name at least, to follow the teachings of the IACC.

The McCain campaign has praised Palin's executive experience and sought to paint her as a fiscal watchdog and a reformer. As Mayor of Wasilla, though, her administration, according to local officials, was best known for cronyism and waste.

In the 2006 mayoral race, after four years on city council, Palin blasted her opponent for his "tax and spend mentality."

Once in office she spent more than $50,000 in city funds, without council approval, to redecorate her office.

When questioned about the expenditure at a city council meeting, Palin reportedly responded, "I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't."

Palin employed a lobbying firm, as Mayor of Wasilla (with a population of 6,700), to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks.

Palin is touted on the campaign trail as the most popular governor in America. Some have suggested that her popularity is a result of the combination of her engaging personality and a penchant for misrepresenting her record.

In a speech before the Republican Convention, accepting the vice presidential nomination, Palin said "I told the Congress 'thanks, but no thanks,' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

Since then it has come to light that Governor Palin initially supported the bridge project. She decided to put a halt to the project when it became clear that rising costs would not cover the construction and there was mounting uproar over the project in the lower 48.

Also, while Palin claimed to have said "no thanks" to the funding for the bridge, she, in fact, accepted and rerouted the money, garnered through an earmark by Senator Ted Stevens, to other state projects.

Palin's view of the world has been influenced by teachings of the Pentecostal Church. She has not made a secret of her belief that government and religion should go hand-in-hand.

Addressing a Pentecostal Church audience, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.

She said, "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending (U.S. soldiers) out on a task that is from God."

Exhorting the congregants, Palin said, "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

As governor of Alaska, Palin declared the week of November 18-25, 2007 as Bible Week in the state.

Palin said, "since the earliest days of our democracy, Americans have turned to the Bible for divine guidance, comfort, and encouragement." She added, “the National Bible Association reminds Alaskans and people of all faiths of the Bible's unique place in American life.”

Palin, who supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, acknowledges there is global warming, but does not believe it is a man-made problem. (This is a position Palin has changed since being added to the Republican ticket.)

She said, “A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location." Palin added, “I’m not one, though, who would attribute it to being man-made.”

The Palin family is dependent on big oil, Todd Palin is employed by BP. He left the company in 2007, after 18 years with the company, giving up a management position, as a Production Manager working on the North Slope, in order to avoid conflict of interest charges.

At the time Governor Palin was involved in negotiations with BP to build a natural gas pipeline.

Seven months later, in need of additional income, Todd returned to work for BP in in a non-management position as a production operator.

One of Palin's most controversial acts as Governor of Alaska has been supporting aerial hunting of wolves and bears; a practice Alaskans voted down twice.

She devoted $400,000 to fund a campaign which was eventually successful in legalizing aerial hunting.

To conclude, it's important to keep in mind that the McCain campaign is seeking to make the most of Palin's personal style and interests, while at the same time attacking the Obama campaign for any related reference to those issues which is not in a positive light.

Palin being a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a hunting enthusiast and a fisherwoman gets plenty of attention from the McCain publicity machine.

Her being named Miss Wasilla and finishing as the runner-up in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant is something the campaign would prefer not be discussed. Especially when any reference to Palin being "pretty" is said to be an attack on her creditability. It doesn't surprise me, considering this contradiction, that people are posting PhotoShopped photos on the web.

Meg Whitman, Former Ebay CEO, Winner Of Republican Veepstakes

The word on the street is that former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman is the winner of the Republican Veepstakes.

John McCain's selection of Whitman will be announced in time for coverage on the Friday morning news shows. That to negate any bounce Barack Obama will get at the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

This comes indirectly from the McCain campaign; I learned of the pick from a political junkie I know who has direct ties to the Republican National Committee.

I came out ahead $500 on the pick of Joe Biden on the Democratic side; backing up my initial $1,000 bet on Kathleen Sebelius with a $1,500 bet on Biden. This time my money is on Whitman.

Senator McCain has said of the former Ebay CEO, "In these economically challenging times we need to call on people with wisdom and background like Meg Whitman."

If personal disdain and disgust, which could be set aside for political gain, was the criteria Mitt Romney would be standing beside McCain in St. Paul.

Romney, who was in the running until the very end, was rejected, ultimately, to avoid the Democrats using the same strategy which has been incorporated against Obama.

Governor Romney denounced Senator McCain during the primaries. That's video the Republicans do not want to see broadcast again and again as is the criticism of Obama by Hillary Clinton.

Senator Clinton's success in the Democratic primaries contributed to the choice of Whitman. Republicans have been aggressively pursuing Democrats and Independents who supported Clinton.

While the choice of Sebelius would likely have inflamed Clinton supporters on the Democratic side, choosing a woman bolsters the GOP ticket.

Whitman outdistanced Carly Fiorina, former Hewlett-Packard CEO, party because of a gaffe Fiorina committed on the trail during the primaries.

Fiorina caused a firestorm around McCain when she said, "Let me give you a real, live example, which I've been hearing a lot about from women. There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth control medication. Those women would like a choice."

Whitman's ability to bolster the ticket when it comes to the economy was said to be more important than her gender. Economic issues are as much a weakness for McCain as security issues are for Obama.

She also won't have any problem serving as McCain's attack dog; a role Senator Biden stepped into nicely for Obama.

Choosing a Vice Presidential candidate who would solidify the ticket was, in the end, more valuable than someone who could help pick up Electoral Votes in a single state.

Kathleen Sebelius To Be Named Obama Vice President

My money is on Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be Barack Obama's pick for Vice President.

Senator Obama has a news conference scheduled in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday at the same location where he announced his run for the White House.

The Obama/Sebelius ticket will be announced at that event.

That's the conclusion I've drawn after talking with political junkies from sea to shining sea over the past two weeks; including some with connections to the campaign.

Sebelius, I think, is a good pick. She was elected Governor of the State of Kansas in 2003 and was returned to office in 2006.

These two paragraphs from the Governor's biography speak volumes...

At the heart of Governor Sebelius’ administration is a commitment to growing the Kansas economy and creating jobs; ensuring every Kansas child receives a quality education; protecting Kansas families and communities; improving access to quality, affordable health care; and taking advantage of the state’s renewable energy assets.

Through a commitment to making the state’s business climate more attractive – and by balancing the state budget without raising taxes – the Kansas economy has rebounded resulting in low unemployment and the creation of thousands of new jobs.

I'm still working on McCain's pick. The picture is hazy at best on the Republican side. The only thing I can say with certainty at this point is that the pick will not be Jeb Bush.

Stay tuned....

Now, More Than Ever, It's Time To Make America PURPLE.

Photograph by Kilroy_60

Red States and Blue States {Be sure to put the Red before the Blue in George W. Bush's America} have become a mainstay of the American lexicon. Boil everything down and that is the root of the problem in that we should be Purple.

Not that everyone should share the same beliefs. But it needs to be about US not We and Them --- or We and Them.

People are flocking to the far ends of the spectrum, not only abandoning the middle but seeking to ignore {at best} or deny {at worst} the existence of the other. One thing for sure, the agenda of whichever group you do not belong is likely being dismissed. There is no meaningful dialog, no debate, no exchange of ideas. Let alone any effort to find common ground.

Further, we seem to have lost sight of a basic principle on which this nation was founded. While the person {men thus far} who lives in the White House is said to be the most powerful in the world we should not forget it is because he works for US --- ALL OF US --- Red and Blue and Blue and Red. And the people who work in that building with the big dome at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue {the ones who are empowered to choose the wage they will be paid} are charged with representing us.

Who is the "us" that is being represented in Washington, D.C. and {insert the name of your state's capital city}? It's the fanatics at the farthest ends of the spectrum that are setting the agenda and creating the environment in which we are expected to survive. The majority of us are silent in terms of what counts.

You (whomever you may happen to be} are more likely to have voted for the winner of American Idol than for the people who are charged with representing you in our government(s = local state and federal). You are most likely also not one of the people making telephone calls, sending emails, transmitting faxes or writing letters to the people responsible for creating policy and making law.

If you are happy with the way things are then you likely needn't do anything. {All indication are there are very few of us who are happy with the way things are.} Continue as you are and there will be no improvement. Although things could get worse.

Starting tomorrow declare REAL independence. Stop being part of the silent majority.

Engage in conversations about political matters with people you know and people you don't know. Don't have fear to express what you think or to stand up for what you feel.

Don't forget that communication means listening not just talking and hearing. Listening and considering the value of information that is offered to you. It's not about being right or wrong; it's about finding what is best for the country as a whole. Not for whatever particular niche to which you belong.

Write an email, make a telephone call, fax, dare I say write a letter to someone who is representing you at the local state or national level each week.

As this becomes a habit perhaps you'll contact one at each level on a weekly basis. You can make contact to support what that person is doing, to object to what they are dong or to suggest an adjustment in their stance to better reflect what is better for your community or your state or your country.

Don't be silent. Don't whine or bitch to people who don't have the power to do anything about the situation with no follow-up. Do encourage people {those who agree with you and those who don't} to write that email, make that call or send that letter.

One last thing. Whether you're happy or unhappy with the way things are do one thing ----------------------------VOTE.

This narrative originally appeared on 4 July, 2006.
Over the past two years the Bush Administration has
continued to foster a culture of division. Now, more
than ever, it is essential that we come together and
Make America Purple.

Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail '08

Did Hillary Clinton's response to the Monica Lewinsky scandal cause her to lose creditability?

I applaud the {male} student who asked that question of Chelsea Clinton recently.

It was surprising to see Chelsea's initial deer in the headlights response, which transitioned quickly to her taking a defensive posture to minimize any damage to the campaign.

Applause followed Chelsea's assertion, "...I don't think that's any of your business."

None of his business? None of our business? That response, to me, was a bad joke.

Billary has become Hillbilly which makes the relationship between Chelsea's parents anything but none of our business.

What I would like to know is how did Chelsea Clinton visit "maybe 70 college campuses", as she said, before someone had the spine to ask the question.

Bill has been crisscrossing the country serving as Hillary's attack dog while she trumpets her experience as First Lady. That makes her reaction to the Lewinsky scandal relevant.

Appointment schedules from Hillary's days as First Lady were recently made public. She was at The White House the entire day when the Lewinsky scandal broke. While I agree that it was a personal crisis for her as a wife and mother it was a public crisis for the country. What are we to think about her public response?

The good Senator from New York talks time and again how she will be ready on day one for whatever comes across her desk. What if the issue she has to deal with is not the economy, not the war and not some new impending crisis far from home, but instead that Bill has been diddlying around again?

The fact we haven't heard about it doesn't necessarily mean that Bill has kept his pants zipped up. That old horn dog didn't come by the name Slick Willie without justification.

If Hillary Clinton is so hungry for the power of The Oval Office that she's willing to continue a campaign that could tear the Democratic Party apart she, Bill and Chelsea must be willing to stand up and answer the tough, uncomfortable questions.

Barack Obama For President Of The United States

Tuesday, 4 March, voters go to the polls in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont. While not "super Tuesday", it could be the day that tells the tale for the Democrats.

It was once thought to be not much more than a formality whether Senator Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic Party standard bearer. Those days are long forgotten.

Senator Barack Obama has won 11 contests in a row, including the Democrats Abroad vote. His message of hope and change is attracting huge crowds and a boatload of money. Most important, to me, is that I think it's a message he truly believes in and will deliver on.

If that messages carries the day on Tuesday I think it could well signal the end for Clinton's campaign.

I never bought into John Edwards talking about being from the working class and for the common people. His words, to me, were hollow. Obama, on the other hand, has worked for people who have not had an easy time of life; that when he could have taken much easier jobs for a whole lot more money.

To me there is not a better candidate than Obama to step in and clean up the mess George W. Bush has created. There is not a better candidate to bring together what I see as a fractured nation.

I encourage you to support Barack Obama in his run for President of the United States.

For President Of The United States, I'm Supporting...

Have you ever seen the episode of Seinfeld where George Costanza purposefully does everything opposite of what he believes is right...and things work out great for him?

I checked out a website called Electoral Compass USA. You get to take a position on 36 propositions; then your answers are analyzed to see where you stand compared to the candidates. What better way, I thought, to affirm my position on the issues of the day?

Before taking the test, I gathered supplies; a handful of amyl nitrite, two grams of Columbian flake and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

The results of the analysis show...

The answers I gave placed me closest to Fred Thompson.
{The pencil in the chat represents "my position"}

This is where my answers placed me on the issues of...

National Security
Terrorism
Iraq
Immigration
---(-)-> Law and Order <-(-)---
Gun Control
Economy
Family
Education
Healthcare
Income
Environment
Given the results, I'm prepared now to announce that I'm supporting...

Barack Obama

Today Is A Day For Americans To Take A Stand.

I Stand AGAINST The War In Iraq.

Because this...

has NOTHING to do with this...

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney's War
is a CLUSTERFUCK.
