That's How I Roll

"Dear Mr. Hefner:
We all love our legends, and far be it from The National Observer to try to rob Hunter S. Thompson of his (The Playboy Interview, November, 1974). As a fascinating figure flitting about on the periphery of journalism, Hunter has a certain value as long a he is not taken too seriously."

This month's full moon is a special one for me. One reason, it comes about a week before my birthday, 29 February.

I wish I could say this is last nights eclipse. {Check out the great shot I got of the eclipse last night! Couldn't help myself.}

Truthfully, I didn't even see it. TheSpecialOne and I were easing into my birthday bash; drinking mimosas and eating chocolate covered strawberries. That was a good warm up for the gram of Columbian flake I had before bed. {It was after that I had TheSpecialOne.}

What was I talking about?

Oh yes, the moon. I got this shot of the moon two nights ago when there was a thin layer of low clouds.

The English name of the February full moon is the Wolf Moon. In Native American culture it's known as the Snow, or Hunger, moon.

Another interesting thing, based on the Farmer's Almanac definition {the third full moon in a season of four full moons}, it's a blue moon.

Interested In Hosting The Third Gonzo Blog Carnival?

I'm talking to people about working with me on the third event in the Gonzo! Blog Carnival Series.

Next Friday we're doing the Family Carnival hosted by Dirty Butter at Blog Village.

Following that, in a week to 10 days most likely, we will be having a Photography carnival. It just so happens that the A Photographer's Eye blog will be ripe for promotion.

Entries for this one are going to be as simple as possible; a post that includes a photograph you shot. If the blogger chooses a post that includes text that will be fine. It won't be required.

As a preview, I'm selected some photographs of the moon I shout recently. I was out shooting a sunset; these shots of the moon were unexpected. It was a great bonus! I was pleased with the results.

Thank You, Sir... May I Have Another?

"There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line." - Oscar Levant

There is a restaurant/bar where I took dates for years, especially first dates. It was fancy enough to impress, but not too much to be intimidating.

I should say here that I always tip. I make my choices based on the performance of the bartender or server. There's no standard 15 or 20%. I've tipped more than 50% - even 100% - and I've tipped a penny. To the degree they show they're interested, function in a way that makes me believe they enjoy their job and are attentive to my needs I tip accordingly. One thing that always scores big with me is keeping my waterglass filled.

So, one night I was meeting TheArtist for drinks. It was the first time we ever got together other than for lunch with a client for whom we were both working on a project. I arrived early and thought I'd order one before she got there.

I found a seat in the corner where I had a view of the bar and the door. I find it interesting to watch people, like a fly on the wall. The server was a sweet thing with a ready smile. I asked for a Labatt's Blue, a tall glass of ice water and five or six lime wedges.

She came back with the beer, the water and a small bowl with three thin lime slices. She told me that she would have to charge me if I wanted more. I asked her if I heard correctly that she would have to charge me for limes. She said, yes. I told her I'd never paid for limes there before; she said she could only give me three without charging me.

She came back when she saw I poured the last of the beer in my glass. I asked her for another, to fill my water and to bring me some more limes. She reminded me I'd have to pay for them. I suggested she ask her manager about that. She came back with the water pitcher and said, yes, if I wanted more limes I'd have to pay for them.

At this point, I wanted to make sure there was no question in anyone's mind. Are you saying that I have to pay for them, I asked, or did the manager say I can only have three without paying for them? She said the manager said if I wanted more than three that I'd have to pay. I asked her to tell her manager that I would be getting more limes and I would not be paying for them. I also asked her to be sure to tell the manager he would be cutting the lime for me.

Back she came with my beer. The manager said if you want more limes you'll have to pay for them, she said. That was it. I asked her to go and get the pitcher to refill my glass with water. And when she came back, I told her, I wanted the name and telephone number for the general manager, the franchisee and the president of the corporation. I also told her that if the manager refused to give her the names and telephone numbers I would find them out and complain that he would not give them to me.

She came back and said that the manager said he didn't think there was a need to get the franchisee involved. I asked where the names and telephone numbers were. She said he was getting them for me. Just then the manager came out and asked what the problem was. I asked where the telephone numbers were. He started telling me he didn't think... I said I know what you think; where are the telephone numbers? He pulled a slip of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me. It had the names and telephone numbers. He said he didn't know what the problem was that I thought I needed to talk to the manager or the franchisee.

I told the manager to have a seat. I went on to tell him how I had been bringing dates there for years. I told him that I ate lunch or dinner there, sometimes both, a few times a week. Sometimes more. I told him that I had never paid a penny for limes there or anywhere else. I was, let's say, a bit animated in my conversation. Then, I said...I'll tell you one more thing. I asked for lime wedges. I always ask for lime wedges. And what do I get? I picked up the one thin slice that was still in the bowl, lifted it up in front of his face and shook it so juice went on him. Slices, I said. Paper thin slices. Not wedges. And I never say a word about it! Now, I told him, I want you to go over there to the bar and cut up some lime wedges for me.

When he went to the bar the bartender, who knew me and heard our conversation, handed him a lime, a plate and a knife. He brought it over and cut the lime into wedges for me. Are we going to have anymore problems about paying for lime wedges? I asked. He told me there wouldn't be any problem.

Perfect timing, TheArtist walked up to the table. Is there a problem, she asked. No, there's no problem, I told her. He thanked me for my business and told us to have a good evening. We were there for a few hours drinking; the next time I asked for limes the server brought out a whole bowl. TheArtist said something about them really liking me there.

There was no bill for drinks that night. The manager took care of it. I think he thought that would stop me from complaining. It didn't.

I never heard a word again about paying for limes when I went there. And the bartender always had wedges for me.

As for TheArtist... Those are stories for another time.

September Moon...You've Gone Too Soon

Random Thoughts...

<*> I wonder whether Heaven and Hell are the same for everyone. Or, are they the best or worst of what any individual could experience?

<*> People, I think, pass in and out of our lives for a reason. It is not happenstance alone. What the reason is may, at the time, be impossible to understand. We should give consideration, though, what purpose interactions we have may serve.

<*> I should devote more attention to proofreading the comments I write. It's bad enough that I make sopyt here that I don't correct. I have to be so careful about everything in terms of work, I think, that somehow the mistakes I make in the blogosphere are some sort of outlet.

<*> After all these years I still enjoy M*A*S*H. I love the episodes where characters write letters. The one where they appear in the black and white documentary is another favorite.

<*> The outrage that has blossomed over waif-then models is interesting. My favorite, Elle Macpherson, with all due admiration for Heidi Klum, was known as The Body for a reason. Her intelligence has made her so much more interesting.

<*> I hate the political campaign season. It's dreadful what people do to get elected; let alone the lengths to which they will go to tear down someone else.

<*> I think this is the definition of mixed feelings...it was great to see a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates had won the National League batting title. In the next second, the question arises, how long will be stay with this once proud franchise that has now floundered for so long?

<*> Have you noticed that what passes for "news" on so many cable channels - in order to fill 24 hours of programming - is more about discussing what is not known in some given situation than reporting to us what has happened?

"Include me out." - Samuel Goldwyn

As One Second Passes To The Next, We Greet A New Year

During the leap second we had on Saturday, I decided one posting addressing a potpourri of subject matter would be the optimum approach for an update. Looking back through last years Daytimer pages, it became clear I had far too many notes to create a post for each one.

ALTERNATIVE VIEWPOINTS SOUGHT RE: THE PRESIDENCY OF GEORGE W. BUSH

The email I have been receiving related to this blog has been interesting. It has not been insightful or informative.

There have been no viewpoints offered or examples provided of outstanding achievements accomplished by the administration currently in power. There has been nothing offered that has caused me to question whether the viewpoints I have shared and the opinions I have expressed may potentially be misguided, inaccurate or wrong.

It has been expressed that there is not appreciation for my criticism of the current administration. There has been a viewpoint expressed as to whether I am consumed by a need to comment negatively on the performance of George W. Bush and his team. Response to my invitation to comment has gone so far as to be qualified as an opportunity best not pursued.

Are there examples of successes accomplished by the Presidency of George W. Bush that I have missed? Has the United States of America undergone improvements since the election of 2000 of which I am unaware? Were there problems that existed prior to the Republicans assuming power at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue which have been eliminated improving the quality of life internally and/or making the planet a healthier, safer place to be?

THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2011

The "News of the Day" is that yesterday the Pittsburgh Steelers knocked off the Detroit Lions making it playoff time in The Steel City. The day was most memorable in that The Bus ROLLED! Jerome Bettis hit paydirt three times tying a career record.

The Steelers official website notes that this might be Bettis' "final game at Heinz Field in a Steelers uniform." The article detailing the victory over Detroit goes on to say, "Bettis acted like a man who was playing his final game in a city that rejuvenated his NFL career 10 years ago and has become a home to him since. He signed dozens of jerseys and footballs for his teammates and posed for pictures in the locker room and on the field for close to an hour after the game ended."

Jerome Bettis is the fifth leading rusher in the history of the National Football League. Once he retires and the mandatory waiting time passes, Bettis - who is now 33 years old - will be in the first class for which he is eligible to enter the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Pittsburgh travels to Cincinnati Sunday to take on the Bengals; both teams posted 11-5 regular season records this season. It has been a decade since the Steelers appeared in the Super Bowl. Before that, after four world championships in six years, there had been a 15 year absence. The miraculous 15-1 record Bill Cowher's team posted last year primarily with a rookie quarterback proved that playing on your homefield is not a guaranteed path to the Super Bowl.

Having Jerome Bettis return to his home in Detroit with the Steelers finally winning one for the thumb would make the victory as sweet as it could be. As painful as it is to say, whether he hoists the Super Bowl trophy or not come February 5th, #36 should retire at the end of this campaign.

On a related note, clearly the Green Bay Packers are not at this point dedicated to bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Lambeau Field. Like Bettis, Brett Favre should bring the curtain down on his career. It would be difficult to imagine a pair of people with more class entering the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011.

A CLOSING THOUGHT

It only requires sperm for a man to become a father. He needn't have the balls or the backbone to be there when the life he has created arrives. It takes much more for a man to be a dad...heart and soul. My life has been cursed by the former and blessed by the latter. To borrow a quote, which I shall at this point not purse the attribution, There are no illegitimate children; only illegitimate parents. The sad - the most painful - part is what a man deprives his offspring of sharing when he runs away to create another family. One is denied the opportunity to know a brother, or a sister, nieces and nephews...because a man lacked the will and the courage to take responsibility for doing the deed. Child support payments do not make up for the actions of a coward. No, you do not get to take a mulligan in the game of life without penalty.
