Kill The "Anything Goes And General News" Carnival And Put The Rest Of Us Out Of Our Misery

This past week I had three different people whining about the concept of blog carnivals and complaining that they don't work.

That came after I decided to give the "Anything Goes and General News" carnival one last chance to evolved into something it has never been. Chalk that up as a bad decision made while eating mescaline.

I've entered the "Anything Goes and General News" Carnival a number of times. In fact, I've participated in a lot of carnivals {over the past three years} both before and since starting The Gonzo Blog Carnival Series; to become well acquainted with the process and to learn how not to do it.

The "Anything Goes and General News" Carnival is a good one to study if you want to know how not to put together a carnival.

Granted, there are a number of ways to do a carnival badly.

Carnivals that try to establish themselves as some sort of elitist gathering by selecting the posts they'll include based on "quality" or limiting the number of entries they'll accept have never done anything other than make me want to vomit.

I don't know who they're kidding, but I suppose it fulfills some sense of need they have or fills a void in their life.

"Anything Goes and General News" isn't one of those sort of carnivals. Not by a long shot. This carnival will take any post on any subject from any blogger who wants to participate. If the blogger wants to submit more than one post that's not a problem either.

In fact, if you want to write an email filled with gibberish and SPAM links you can get that in as well.

Typically "Anything Goes and General News" is nothing more than a list showing the title of a post, what blogger submitted it and what blog the post appeared in. At least if someone sends in an email that gets included it breaks up the boredom a bit.

I'd characterize "Anything Goes and General News" more as a blogospherian clusterfuck than a carnival.

Carnivals have been around for years while social media has become the WorldWideWeb's marquee draw.

Jose Aviles, the brainless twit behind "Anything Goes and General News", isn't one to miss an opportunity. So now that he's created a pain in the ass for hosts of carnivals who work hard to do it Right he's taking on social media.

Yes, in addition to an email from Jose saying the carnival was posted there was another message saying he had created the "MySpace Like" {sic} No Holds Barred Social Network.

I was drinking whiskey at the time and sent the following email to Jose...

Jose,

This carnival is the damnedest piece of shit going.

It was never good, nothing more than a list, but even those carnivals have their place. It's gone downhill, though, to the point of being among the worst carnivals going.

Why don't you put the fucking thing out of it's misery and find something else to do.

If nothing else, quit wasting my fucking time. Do you really think I, or anyone else who knows anything about social networking, is going to join a site born of this clusterfuck you call a carnival?

Ciao

He responded with the message, "Thanks" to which I responded, "Ho fucking Ho."

I haven't heard anything else from Jose.

Help Wanted: Hosts For The Gonzo Blog Carnival Series

After a year-long hiatus, The Gonzo Blog Carnival Series is returning in 2009. That means I need help from other bloggers who will host some of the carnivals at their site.

What Is A Blog Carnival?

A blog carnival, for those who are not acquainted with the term, is an "event" where a host blog accepts links to posts from other bloggers. The host then crafts the submissions into a single post and publishes it on their blog on a predetermined date.

A blog carnival provides a number of blogs with the opportunity to gain exposure at one time. Visitors will go to the host blog to view the carnival and be able to click through to links provided by each blogger participating in the carnival.

Why Do I Want To Participate In A Carnival?

Some of the benefits an individual blogger can gain from participating in a blog carnival are...
  • Meeting new bloggers who attend the carnival and see their post
  • Having more traffic coming to their blog on the day of the carnival
  • Regularly getting more visits as a result of participating in the carnival
  • Receiving more comments
  • Receiving offers for link swaps
What Will Be Expected Of Me As A Host?

As a carnival host you are entrusted with the event to manage from implementation to execution. I work with you, however little or much you need, to provide support and assistance. It's to the mutual benefit of the host and myself that the carnival be as successful as possible.
  • Most carnivals in the Gonzo Blog Carnival Series have a set theme; some are a "free for all" where posts on {most} any topic can be submitted.
  • It's up to the host to accept a set of rules they can live with that will govern what submissions can be included in the carnival they're hosting.
  • The Gonzo Blog Carnival Series, as a rule, does not reject posts which comply with the rules set forth by the host. Hosts should expect to include all entries which comply with the rules they set forth. {Questions? Ask.}
  • Hosts of Gonzo Blog Carnival Series events do not reject posts based on their subjective judgment of "quality" and do not limit the number of entries they will include.
  • Hosts are expected to run, in most cases, two promotional announcements; one announcing they will be hosting the carnival and one prior to the deadline.
  • It's helpful if the host can create a banner for their carnival or to have a banner created.
  • Hosts are expected to network to solicit assistance in promoting the carnival.
  • Optimally hosts will send an email acknowledging each entry and ask for help promoting the carnival. {It's best to include links to blogs who help with promotion in the promo post prior to deadline that runs in the host blog}
  • Hosts are solely responsible for creating the carnival post. Keep in mind there is not one way for a carnival to be presented an that the carnival has creative freedom in building the carnival. {Optimally, the carnival will be more than a simple list.}
  • Hosts are expected to contact each blogger who has an entry included in the carnival once it is posted.
  • Hosts are expected to visit each entry once the carnival has been posted and write a comment.
What Payoff Should The Host Expect To Receive?
  • An increase in traffic leading up to the carnival
  • A spike in traffic the day of the carnival
  • The opportunity to have relationships with bloggers who contributed posts to the carnival and with bloggers who visit the carnival
  • Offers for link swaps from bloggers who contribute posts to the carnival and bloggers who visit the carnival
  • A boost in ongoing traffic after the carnival
  • A larger amount of comments following the carnival
  • An increase in Page Rank
The payoff for the host depends on the amount and quality of time and effort they put forth.

I believe that generally covers everything. It's important to remember than when you host a carnival it's both yours and mine. We're in this together and it's in our mutual best interest to make the carnival a success.

Why, As A Blogger, Should I Get Involved In Blog Carnivals?

There is no promotional effort better than a carnival to boost the performance of your blog. The key to make the carnival pay off is participation. That means contributing a post to the carnival, visiting the carnival and writing a comment and visiting the other entries in the carnival and writing meaningful comments.

This I know, because there were 17 Gonzo Blog Carnivals in 2007 and three Soup To Nuts progressive dinner carnivals this year. In addition to that experience I've appeared in hundreds of carnivals.

In the blogosphere as in life, you do not benefit if you make no investment.

It's Party Time In The Blogosphere!

Photograph courtesy of The Lives and Times...

My buddy Tony is celebrating the three-year blogiversary of his Lives and Times... blog. There's a Blogiversary Celebration Carnival next week, so let's get together and have some fun.

If you've attended a blog carnival before you know it's a great way to meet other bloggers and benefit from both increased traffic and new link swaps. If you're a carnival virgin it's time you have some fun. {Here's all you need to know}

It's easy to take part.

You don't have to write a new post, in fact it can be any post you're published in your blog. {one post per blog, however many blogs you have}. There's no specific theme for this carnival, just pick a post you think will interest people in checking out your blog.

Here are the rules...
  • Entries accepted from blogs only.
  • Only English language posts will be accepted.
  • No more than one post per blog.
  • No posts that are advertisements.
  • No posts with titles that include profanity or pictures of a sexual nature.
The carnival runs on Sunday, November 23rd. It takes a lot of time to put one together, which you know if you've ever hosted, so don't delay, enter today.

Submit your post to: starkreporter@gmail.com with the subject line: Blogiversary Carnival.

Include...
  • Your name as you want it to appear in the post
  • The name of your blog
  • The blog URL
  • The title of the post
  • The post URL
If you have any question, at this point, I'd recommend writing Tony at: starkreporter@gmail.com.

Do you have a blogiversary coming up? Drop me a line if you want to put together a carnival. I'll do what I can to give you a hand.

Dinner Is Served - Welcome To The Main Course of Soup To Nuts!

Yes, it's time again for the blogosphere's only progressive dinner blog carnival, Soup To Nuts! I'm happy to be serving the Main Course this time around.

This will be great fun whatever stuff may be running 'round your head! It is a group writing project of sorts where you can check out the lives and times of widely diverse bloggers. Whether it's a pajama mommy or a banquet manager.

OK, let's get into the carnival...

There's a lot in the news, which may or may not be good news, including weight loss, business, and on a related note jobs and career coaching, online education and technology.

There's so much happening online, an internet business guide can be a great help; especially if you're looking for a good deal on your internet service or even if you're looking into health plans.

It's important to not become overwhelmed with online information so take it slow, eh.

OK, get the beat, beatnick. It's critically important that you're passionate about something. It could be music or, another form of entertainment, magic.

Of course there's a lot of passion about food and gardening as well as animals, whether it's a dog or a horse. Some people are passionate about continuing education; which, I think, should be an ongoing process.

True happiness in life can come from living by shamanic principles - you could call it a tao of simplicity. Sometimes it's great to just sit back and enjoy the view. but you want to be careful if there are bullet holes in the mailbox.

In business news, not everyone can be a sales diva. Some people are interested in making money from home; which could come from selling artistic photography. Whatever it is, the bottom line is to make a profit and networking can really help; otherwise you may need therapy. Done right, you can make money selling dog poop...because ideas matter!

Today's the day, gentleman, when to be a savvy daddy you need humor to get through.

It's a challenge at times because the web is making cable tv obsolete; a bad thing about the web, of course, is at times you can't get away from double barreled opinions.

If you have multiple personalities you may want to start at the top and read through this again; you may find something different you like next time!

Be sure you check out all five courses of our dinner. We have some great hosts joining me this time including...
That will wrap up the third edition of Soup To Nuts. I expect to announce the fourth and final edition of Soup To Nuts for 2008 in the next couple weeks.

Thanks to my fellow hosts for the great work you've done with this carnival.

Why Wait? Send Your Entries In For Soup To Nuts "3"

I really wanted to enter last time, but I missed the deadline.

That email has come numerous times after each of the first two editions of Soup To Nuts, the blogosphere's only progressive dinner blog carnival.

You can continue to wait to send your entry for Soup To Nuts "3", and have one thing after another come up, sidetracking you until the deadline passes...or you can enter now.

If you've never participated in a blog carnival, here's all you need to know, it's the best way to attract visitors to your blog and to connect with other bloggers.

Of all the carnivals out there, why is Soup To Nuts the one carnival you shouldn't miss? Because there is no other carnival that provides you as much exposure. It's that simple.

Every website, every blog, attracts its own organic traffic.

In Soup To Nuts, unlike other carnivals, you don't benefit just from the traffic that comes to one blog, you get visitors from five different host blogs.

People visiting the carnival can easily navigate from one host blog to another, just as in a progressive dinner where you go to a different house or restaurant for each course.

Another unique benefit of Soup To Nuts is that you get the opportunity to spotlight five different posts. You can enter a post in each of the five courses. If you publish multiple blogs you can submit five entries from each one!

Check out this post for all the rules; if you have any questions write a comment and I'll provide an answer.

If you publish a post to promote Soup To Nuts, please, write a comment on that same post including the URL. All five host blogs will provide a link back to you.

I will be hosting the Main Course here at The Gonzo Papers this time around. Joining me are...

Stories of a Traveling Diva
serving Hors d'oeuvres, Group Writing Projects serving Appetizers, Herbal Connection serving the First Course and Blog N' Butter serving Dessert.

I don't expect there to be a Drinks After Dinner Reception this time...which means once the deadline passes, submissions will not be accepted for inclusion. {Enter now}

When a sixth course was added, to accept entries right up to the day before, people still wrote later saying how they meant to send an entry, but didn't.

Please remember, to truly benefit from any carnival you need to do more than submit an entry. It's necessary to visit the carnival, check out other blogs and write comments. That's where your big payoff comes.
